Code of Conduct for All Members
Welcome to the Brighton Dragon Boat Club! Whether you’re here for recreation, fitness, or competition, we strive to create a welcoming and supportive environment for all paddlers. This Code of Conduct outlines the principles and expectations every member should follow to ensure a positive experience for everyone, regardless of skill level or purpose.
1. Communicate Respectfully
If you encounter challenges with another paddler, address them calmly and privately during a break. Use a respectful tone and collaborative approach, such as: “I’ve noticed something that might be affecting us both—can we talk about it?”Constructive communication fosters understanding and teamwork. For example, one paddler once asked me, “Can I make a suggestion?” This simple, non-judgmental question opened the door to helpful feedback and mutual improvement without creating tension.
2. Avoid Aggressive Tone and/ or Public Criticism
Dragon boating is a shared experience. Criticizing or calling out others disrupts the harmony of the group and can discourage participation. Instead, remember that everyone is learning and contributing to the best of their ability, whether they’re seasoned paddlers or new to the sport.
3. Respect the Role of the Coach
Coaching from another seat in the boat other than the coach's can confuse your fellow paddlers and detract from the clarity of the session. If you notice an issue, bring it to the coach’s attention. For example:
“Coach, I’m hitting the paddle of the person in front of me. Could you check my reach to see if it’s causing the issue?”
This allows the coach to assess and address the situation appropriately.
4. Support and Encourage New Members
Recreational paddling often introduces newcomers to the sport. Take the opportunity to mentor and support them in a welcoming way. Small gestures, like offering tips when asked or helping with setup, can make a big difference in their experience.
5. Foster a Spirit of Community
The Brighton Dragon Boat Club is a community that values inclusivity and respect. Whether paddling recreationally or competitively, we all share a responsibility to create a positive and supportive environment. Frustrations are natural but should always be managed with kindness and consideration.
